Science and Maths Academy

A New Approach in State Education

Consistently challenging the notion of what state education can be, Narangba Valley State High School has created the ‘Science Mathematics Academy’ or SMA, a school within a school, catering for students in years 4 to 10. The SMA program is a comprehensive, contextualized and enacted whole school and regional STEM program which has run since 2012.
In 2017 the SMA currently has seven individual classes from Year 4 through to Year 10. The SMA has been designed to provide an avenue for students in the outer northern corridor of Brisbane to receive high level and contextual education in STEM subjects at a low cost and through the public school arena.
Our education philosophy recognises the need for a special journey and adventure, Einstein (1929) stated "Imagination is more important than knowledge", imagining the full potential of every unique individual and building the whole academic, social, cultural, community and sporting person is an essential outcome of the SMA program.

Both the Primary and Secondary phase of the program is conducted in the purpose built facilities at Narangba Valley State High School and creates an interface between Universities, Industry and Communities.

Building future leaders is an essential element within the Academy and all SMA students participate in ‘The Bridge’ and ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ Award program that fosters initiative, independence, personal and social development through students gaining valuable experiences, life skills and confidence. SMA students will have the chance to discover their potential through encouragement and an individualised program that challenges them to be more aware of their environment and community, transforming them into responsible young adults.

SMA Selective Entry Process

Only 25 positions are offered in each year level to Gifted and Talented students.  Applicants wishing to enter the Science Mathematics Academy are required to participate in a selective entry process, requiring students to complete the select entry test, and participate in a entry suitability Interview.

The entry process for positions for 2018 cohorts have now opened with applications closing at the end of week 7 term 3 (25th August 2017).
