Mikayla started at Narangba Valley SHS in 2015, joining our year 7 AFL Academy. From a netball background, Mikayla began playing AFL for primary school and loved the physicality, something she didn’t get in netball. From day 1 she was a fierce competitor, a hard ball winner who didn’t let her size affect her confidence on field. In 2016 Mikayla was selected in the Sunshine Coast Regional Under 16 AFL Team as a 13 year old, and would go on to earn selection in the Queensland Under 16 team this year. This was the start of her journey in the AFLW talent pathway.
Mikayla represented the Sunshine Coast and Queensland several more times before ageing out of the competition, and represented the Vipers AFL Academy every year in high school. She was talent identified through her participation in our Schools of Excellence games and invited to the Brisbane Lions Academy, where her performances earned her Queensland under 18 and 19 selection, as well as a place in the prestigious NAB AFL National Academy, in preparation for AFLW selection. Despite missing almost the entire 2019 QAFLW state league and representative footy seasons with 2 separate, serious injuries that both required surgery, Mikayla’s dedication and resilience saw her work her way back into fitness to play again at state league level and be selected for Queensland in 2020 and 2021.

"Being your teacher, your coach, your teammate and even your Uber driver, I have had the best seat in the house, watching you develop into the player you are today- now an AFLW player.

Your hard work, resilience through the most horrific of injuries and your desire to become the best you can be have lead you to where you are today.
What a legacy for Narangba Valley State High School students to aspire to.’(Ashleigh Hales)

Last year, Mikayla’s AFL performance, as well as her academic achievements earned her the prestigious Riewoldt AFL Scholarship to Bond University on the Gold Coast, where she is currently studying a Bachelor of Psychology, whilst balancing the demands of representative football and living away from home.
We are very proud of Mikayla’s achievements and congratulate her on her selection to the Brisbane Lions!
