The Music Program of Excellence at NVSHS is a selective Junior Secondary pathway (Years 7-9) designed for students who demonstrate strong musical ability, commitment and a passion for artistic growth.
Established in 2003, the program has developed a proud tradition of cultivating disciplined, creative and highly capable young musicians. It provides a rigorous and enriched curriculum for students seeking to extend their performance skills, compositional craft and analytical understanding of music.
This program is ideal for students who already have experience on their chosen instrument and are ready to engage in a structured and supportive learning environment.

Our Extended Curriculum
A key point of difference at NVSHS is that Music Excellence operates as a full-year subject across Years 7-9.
This extended contact time allows students to engage deeply in:
- Advanced performance development
- Composition and creative music-making
- Musicology and analytical listening
- Collaborative ensemble work
- Refinement of musicianship and theoretical understanding
Students benefit from access to one of the region's larger Instrumental Music programs, providing specialist teachers across a broad range of instruments and ensembles. This breadth of expertise ensures students receive high-quality technical instruction and diverse performance opportunities.
Learning extends well beyond the classroom through:
- Workshops and masterclasses with industry professionals
- Performances at school and community events
- A biennial rotation between an International Music Tour and a dedicated Music Camp
These immersive experiences foster confidence, independence and artistic maturity.
Program Requirements
Students in the Music Program of Excellence are expected to demonstrate dedication both in and beyond the classroom.
Program requirements include:
- Compulsory participation in Instrumental Music lessons or private tuition
- Compulsory participation in at least one school music ensemble
- Ongoing development of practice routines and performance preparation
- Payment of the Student Resource Scheme (SRS) fee associated with the course
Ensemble participation and individual tuition are essential components of the program, ensuring students develop technical proficiency, stylistic awareness and professional rehearsal habits.
Pathways and Long-Term Benefits
The Music Program of Excellence provides a strong foundation for senior studies including:
- General Music (Years 10-12)
- Music Extension (Year 12 only)
Many graduates of the program continue into senior music studies, with a number progressing to tertiary study at institutions such as the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and the University of Queensland.
Importantly, the benefits of Music Excellence extend beyond musical careers. Students develop highly transferable skills including:
- Creative and critical thinking
- Complex problem-solving
- Collaboration and leadership
- Discipline and time management
Graduates of the program have successfully pursued pathways across a wide range of fields, including STEM disciplines, education, law and the creative industries.
